The future is here. While the common conception of “future” is rooted in the technological advancements made in the tech world, the future for many industries is actually developing through a millennia-old resource – hemp. Industrial hemp has been known for centuries to have the potential to replace industrial practices which yield high amounts of waste, but for years the capabilities for hemp production have been stifled by government regulations. These regulations have started to fade away, leaving the door open for an industrial hemp boom. With millions of people exploring the potentials for the integration of hemp production, there is a lot of new news floating around – take a look at these three exciting stories about industrial hemp and the exciting potentials it holds.

  • Kansas Start-Up Begins Manufacturing Prosthetics from Hemp Many people do not know the scope of applications for industrial hemp. Human Plant Solutions, a small start-up in Newton, Kansas is determined to aid in the expansion of such knowledge. When asked about hemp was the company’s preference for producing arm and leg prosthetics, Kyle Trivisonno replied that the hemp plastic is not only more sustainable than traditional plastics and fiberglasses, but that it is less of a skin irritant for the end user of the limbs. Prior to the venture into hemp, Mr. Trivisonno had produced thousands of “classic” prosthetic limbs from acrylic resin, carbon fiber, fiberglass, and even thermoplastics. When presented with the opportunity to produce hemp prosthetics, he took it. The results are starkly positive, and he intends to support both those who need prosthetics and the farmers who provide his hemp for years to come.
  • Industrial hemp fiber is better than wood in every way Robert Ziner is the Founder and CEO of the Canadian Industrial Hemp Corporation (CIHC) and recently contributed to hemptoday.net’s popular news section with an insightful article about just why hemp fiber should be the future of paper production around the world. Speaking directly to the lack of virgin forest left in the United States (only 5%), Mr. Ziner stresses heavily the truly renewable nature of industrial hemp. Hemp not only grows noticeably faster than wood, but provides 30% more cellulose than wood by weight. This highlights perhaps the most impressive prospect about industrial hemp – it is better than wood in every way. The author goes on to explain how conservation efforts across the world could be bolstered by the utilization of hemp in industrial practices of all scales.
  • Hemp Legal Regulatory Roundup Published at the beginning of April, but reporting on statutes from mid-February, this article from Mondaq reports largely on the bounds which states have taken in recent months to further reduce restrictions on hemp production. This includes an insight to one of the last hold-out states on legalization, Idaho. Since the federal relaxation on regulation in 2018, Idaho has remained a fervent denier of hemp opportunities, largely thanks to a more conservative legislature. Those tides may be turning, however, as advocacy groups have pushed a bill before the House of Representatives in order to eliminate the state’s hold-out stance.

Industrial hemp is the future, there’s no denying it. The opportunities for hemp application in virtually every industry are becoming clearer everyday.
